Even a Tupperdore or Coolidor would be a step up from the fridge and both are cheap.

I disagree. Apartment dwellers such as my self don't always have the luxury of being able to put their sticks in a climate controlled environment. during the summer when my place reaches 35 Celsius at during and down to 15 - 20 at night with wild RH swings you will get splitting in your wrappers after a week or so of that kind of weather. throw em in the fridge for a couple months wont hurt them. It will slow the aging but i don't keep anything longer because of this. Take them out a day or two before you wanna smoke em and they're mint. Now i have a wineador and my temps and levels are more controlled. but you gotta do what you have to with what you got.

I think its really only safe to buy "Sampler Packs" from online retailers when you have some experience under your belt. Once you have established what you like, brand wise, wrapper wise, taste wise, then its okay to look at some of the online deals. A lot of times these so called "online specials" include something like a 10 pack of various maduros for $29 but only include 2 cigars out of the 10 that you either know about, or would like. Like was mentioned above, its a way for these companies to pawn off brands that don't sell or even worse, brands that they make themselves that often times are very low quality. I buy from online retailers often but only stuff that I know i am going to like, and after proper research on pricing and availability has been done. Also, I always let them rest a good month or two in my humidor before given one a puff. If you want something to smoke now, when going out with friends, a local tobacconist is the way to go. They will often times be informative, helpful and find you a deal or two in your price range. For new herfers, the local tobacconist is truly the way to go. Once you establish that relationship, its great to go in and discover new smokes. Yes, the prices wont match what you find online, but a few times a month, its nice to find something new to smoke, and its a great experience walking around the store taking in all the sights and smells.

You'd need to work out the composition of the smoke and factor in the elements (oxygen) bound to it too. So do the subtraction above then add on the bits that are added during the combustion. As the combustion is incomplete then its going to be very hard to be precise.

Thanks for the feedback. It think the key on the mail order (from big box stores) is to avoid the "sampler" pack of different brands. That is often how they mask getting rid of some old stuff (and not in a cool "aged" way).

They do unload boxes (same brand) from time to time at a great price.

By being a smart shopper and knowing what I like in a cigar, I have found many great values at under $4.00.
I am talking about well know brands ( Punch, Hoyo, Saint Luis Rey etc) the catch is you will be purchasing form the larger catalog companies who run specials. I still shop at my local shop but when JR or CI has one of my favorite sticks at around $3.00 its hard to pass up.
